Ariel, still being a mermaid, had her arms braced on the beach while she and Flounder spoke. She used her fin to give Flounder a light mist of cool water. “It’s ok Flounder, just calm down. What do you mean, grey face? And what’s a… Vampire? Come to think of it — Who is Violet?” Ariel was completely lost.

“Well, Violet is this girl I like. And now we have a child. I don’t even know how…A vampire is, thanks to Violet and others for explaining, a blood sucking creature…” he said slowly.

By the end of Flounder’s explanation, Ariel’s face showed nothing but complete shock. “Ok.” she said, trying to catch up. “So… What are you going to do?”

Should I be worried……?

Sorry ‘bout that…

I guess it’s exactly the reverse for me.  Milo laughed.  I sort of take being human for granted, it sounds more fun to be a mer…uh…man!

“So… Who are you?” Ariel asked, genuinely curious, not trying to be rude.

Oh!  Sorry.  I’m Milo.  Milo Thatch.  What about you?

“Ariel. Ariel Triton,” she said, giggling at her imitation of MIlo. “I’m from Atlantica. What do you do? What were you doing out here?” Ariel was trying to limit her questions, but she had a lot for this man.

Uh, well, Ariel, I’m a professor of archaeology over at Georgetown.  It’s a university, a school.  But I thought I’d stretch my legs between classes.

“What do you study?”

Nah, they’re normal people, I just thought because…Milo frowned at her, eyebrows wrinkling.  Hold on.  You just said “breathe underwater too.”

Another thing with humans seemed to be that showing was easier than telling. To help explain things, she flipped her fin out of the river, sending water in the air towards Milo. She rested her head on her arms, looking up at him matter of factly.

Mermaids weren’t real.  Then again, people had told Milo that Atlantis wasn’t real - and now look at him!  A tenured professor.  Wow, impressive.  He nodded, sitting down on the river wall.  So…must be pretty fun, being a mermaid.

Ariel was quite shocked at how well the man seemed to be taking the mermaid deal. Some people didn’t believe her, others asked her a ton of questions. He seemed as if he saw them everyday. “It’s pretty fun, I guess. It means you get to explore things a little differently. But, I mean, isn’t it more fun being a human?”

“I got someone Pregnant…”

Ariel’s eyes got wide. “You what? How? Why? What?” Ariel looked at Flounder, thoroughly confused. He was the one to get legs, and yet he wound up in this mess.

“I don’t know….The grey face said Violet was pregnant and then said I was the dad! And to Make it worst, It’s a vampire!!” He said and fell to the ground.

Jane and Ariel

Exactly Jane Porter: @anyone

“Husband?” Ariel always dreamed of falling in love, but it had yet to happen.

“Yes, husband,” Jane smiled happily.  ”Captain John Smith…perhaps you’ve met him?”

Ariel shook her head disappointedly. “I haven’t met too many people yet. Being limited to water will do that.” she said, flicking her tail in and out of the water.

“Oh,” Jane said, unsure what else to say.  It wasn’t as if she could offer support.  Jane looked sympathetically at Ariel.  ”You’re really very eager to learn more about the human world, aren’t you?”

Ariel grinned and looked at Jane from under her bangs. “Yes, I am,” she admitted. “I just don’t see how your world is so bad, like my father says it is. And there’s so many new things that we don’t even know about under the sea.”
